With everyone thinking “green” these days, the tote bag has become popular once again. In our Grandmother’s day, they would always carry their own shopping or tote bags, but then came the quick and easy throw away plastic bag.

Now we are turning the tables again, and the tote bag is here to stay. Even the grocery stores are offering them for sale. This is a great place to start for a craft business.

If your passion, is painting, sewing, quilting, appliqué, embroidery, or even stamping, then you can create the most gorgeous tote bags, for yourself, for unique one of a kind gifts, or to sell at craft shows or online. They are lightweight, and strong, and they really are an open canvas.

With all the latest and greatest craft supplies out there now, you can get printable fabric that you can put in your computer printer. You can print a photograph from your computer, right onto this fabric, which you could then appliqué to the tote, it is washable. This could be a great craft business idea. This works well with pet photos. Everyone loves their pets, and would love to show off their pets picture done up nice on a tote bag.

Make one for yourself and make sure to use it everyday, and you will get people asking about your tote. This is great free advertising.

Stamping also works well on blank totes. The ideas are endless, but make sure and take a picture of your original totes and keep in an album for potential customers to see. Tote bags are a great form of usable art, and pretty soon you will see your artwork on display everyday as tote bags. What a great feeling that would be.

If you love this idea, then why not get your tote bags in bulk?.. Some craft store sell them, but I find them to be most affordable online. You can purchase all different styles depending on what artwork you will put on it. Go ahead, and make some useable art and help keep the planet green.blank tote bags online now

Several years ago, I decided that I would explore the world of fabric dyeing. It was in dyeing fabric that I really learned about color, and the difference between yellow-green and blue-green.

By mixing the colors to make the dye, all of a sudden the resulting colors make more sense, and now, many yards of dyed fabric later, it is easier for me to pick out colors for a quilt.

By actually seeing what color results from mixing 1/4 yellow and 3/4 red versus 1/2 yellow and 1/2 red, it all makes more sense.

What is interesting is that when I took the class, the teacher provided the dye to make the colors you see in the fabric samples below. I did notice that the red was a magenta color, instead of what I normally view as red. (The teacher called it fuscia.)

And the blue was more of a turquoise rather than a traditional blue. But, since it was all new to me anyway, I didn’t really question the differences.

It was just today, as I was once again pondering color that I ran across somewhat of an explanation for the difference. Not that this is a complete explanation, but it does offer some insight.

It turns out that this guy named Dr. Herbert Ives led AT&T’s television research during the 1920s and 1930s. Herbert’s interest in color began at an early age since his father invented techniques for color photography and the half-tone process. Those techniques made printing pictures in newspapers and magazines possible.

And Herbert created a color wheel made up of three “pure” colors. The true significance of all of this is that fabric dyes use the Ives Color Wheel, as was made apparent when I took the fabric dyeing class.

The three pure colors are: magenta, turquoise and yellow. The vibrance of these colors individually is notable, and when they are mixed with each other in specific formulas, they create the most powerful and beautiful colors around.

The Ives Color Wheel features the pure colors magenta, turquoise and yellow.

Quilts made primarily with these pure colors immediately attract attention, whether they are displayed in a quilt show or your home.

Quilting daughter, Stephanie, and I made a pure color quilt together years ago. We chose the colors just because they were fun and bright. Little did we know that these are examples of the pure colors on the Ives Color Wheel and the colors created by mixing pure colors together.

What is interesting about these colors, and possibly the quilt, is that colors this intense are difficult to look at for any length of time. Maybe that is why, after about 6 years, it’s still not completely quilted….On the other hand, there is probably something else going on.

As you choose colors for a quilt, you may want to keep in mind that these intense colors can affect the mood of people looking at them. If you are making a quilt for a child that already has a high level of activity, you may not want to make it using these colors because they would stimulate the child even more.

However, if you have a dull and boring room, like the all-around brown I had in my living room many years ago, adding pure colors will brighten up the room. In my case, it probably would have taken a truckload of pure colors to overpower the brown.

These pure colors, and their variations, are found in nature, and it is interesting to note that whether the colors are tints or shades depends on the season. I know, that probably doesn’t make a lot of sense.

But, it works this way. A tint includes all of the colors between white and the actual pure color. Pastels are good examples of tints, and pastels are the colors of Spring – robin’s egg blue, peach, apricot, mint green, etc.

When you add black to a pure color, you get a shade of the color. As you can imagine, shades are the colors of autumn. When you add black to red, you get a rust color – shades of autumn leaves getting ready to fall from trees.

A tone is what you get when you add grey (not black) to a pure color. These are the colors of winter, and are generally calming colors. These colors are great for bedrooms and quilts for small children.

The real question in my mind is “who created the more ‘traditional’ color wheel? And why?”

But having too much choice can lead to confusion when it comes to choosing the perfect fabric for your quilting project.
Although the quilting craft was initially practiced out of necessity, many different fabrics have been utilized over the years. Cotton, however, is the most preferred fabric. Brightly colored wool is used in some of the historical quilts and they are usually appliqu

Quilters who are not already a machine embroidery enthusiast just may find themselves engrossed in the craft once they realize they could incorporate machine embroidery into their quilting.

Embroidery is a traditional way to add special decorative touches to quilts. Whether by hand or machine, a quilter may accent his or her creation with embroidered flowers or other accents. But today’s machine embroidery – for those willing to try it – can make quilting quite different.

For instance, a quilter may use a simple embroidery design to let the machine “quilt” the project. Simple designs that can be stitched in one color work best, especially for the beginning machine embroidery quilter.

If you want to give this a try, look for an embroidery design that’s simple – one that you can visualize stitched into a quilt. Some redwork inspired designs work well. Other simple designs like flowers, circles, sun/moon, houses, hearts – there are all sorts of designs to choose from – can work well as quilting stitches.

Be sure to keep your quilt top’s theme in mind. We all know and love the traditional beauty of the double wedding ring quilt. While the quilt top is beautiful with its color variety, the quilt back is just as pretty with its simple stitching that follows the design on the top.

What if you used an embroidery machine to quilt hearts into the quilt design? That one unexpected touch would truly make your quilt unique.

Have you ever needed to throw together a quick quilt? Many quilting pros laugh at the notion, but sometimes we need a quick gift to give and want to make it personal. Lap quilts and baby quilts are very easy to create on an embroidery machine.

Simply hoop your top fabric, batting and backing fabric into an embroidery hoop. Pick a design and get to work! Even if you are quilting solid color fabrics, you can complete a quick, beautiful quilt with the embroidery machine in no time!

Some ideas for a baby blanket for a boy would be to use outlines of footballs, airplanes, trucks, trains, etc., for your quilting pattern. The hardest part of your job will be re-hooping fabric and pushing the “start” button!

Ideas for a baby blanket for a girl include outlines of flowers, baskets, dolls, kittens, etc.

The method above uses machine embroidery on relatively small quilts. Larger quilts can be done the same way or may be quilted with machine embroidery by individual quilt blocks. Experiment to decide which method is easiest for you and remember that the machine embroidery quilting method may change with each unique project.

If you can’t find a pattern you like already on embroidery file, ask a digitizer to help you create one. A digitizer is someone who takes art images like line drawings, clip art and fonts and alters them to become a stitch pattern. So if you’d like for your family tree wall hanging to be quilted with a tree pattern, a digitizer can create one for you.

Be sure to let your digitizer know you plan to use the image for quilting. The digitizer will need to plan stitches accordingly.

Quilting is rich in tradition and therefore many true-blue quilters do not like the idea of using machine embroidery to quilt their projects. Isn’t it great to try new ideas and techniques? Remember, not to long ago quilters refused to consider machine quilting at all! Embroidery machines will never take the place of quilters, but it can be a fun and rewarding sewing technique to try from time to time.

The best quilting fabric available in the market today are the RJR fabrics and if you are a quilter then you need look no further for your perfect fabric. This fabric manufacturing company has pioneered in the craft of quilting. The company’s motto is “Creating Fabrics That Reflect Your Lifestyle”. Most quilters cannot deny that RJR fabrics is an extremely successful company when it comes to fulfilling this pledge. RJR is known for manufacturing cotton fabrics of the highest quality and they also guarantee 100% money back.
In today’s world, it is extremely difficult to a company that stands firm on its belief system. But RJR is an exception to this. The most unique thing about RJR is that they absolutely refuse to sell any of thei rproducts to any large chain store. It is RJR’s belief that the best way to serve quilting enthusiasts is through local, small fabric and quilting shops. RJR maintains that small shops hire employees based on their understanding of the quilting craft and who share the enthusiasm of a true quilter. Many small businesses owe their success to the support shown by RJR.
She ownes a Minnesota-based business called Thimbleberries. Thimbleberries grosses the highest when it comes to quilt pattern companies in the nation. Jinny Beyer is another designer who designs for RJR and they are indeed proud to have her. She was one of the first designers who designed a line of fabrics for the purpose of quilting alone and today she designs 3 collections per year for RJR. She also designs a solid line. According to many, Jinny Beyer has revolutionized the industry of quilting with her stylish and amazing fabric designs and also due to her ability to understand a quilters needs.
Susan Branch is another RJR designer, who is responsible for the Martha’s Vineyard Watercolor Collection, which is based on The Heart of the Home, one of her popular book series. Laura Heine has been in the quilting industry for over twenty years and has won many awards as a quilt artist. She owns a quilt shop located in Billins, Montana and she is the author of many books and pattern collections. RJR recently added Cori, a Canadian designer and Myra from Blue Meadow Designs and with this the company has truly gone international. This duo is responsible for publishing many books that have sold in great numbers.
The successful lines of these designers are proof of the fact that RJR fabric pays close attention to all aspects of the business. RJR ensures connectivity with its quilt shops by conducting many special events including a challenge to use a new fabric line for a special quilt design. RJR is very particular about customer service and strives to stay in line with designers as well as quilters. RJR understands their customers completely and this is why they restrict sale to small shops only. RJR is reputed for its quality and it ahs done this combining top-notch design with leading customer service. All conventional quilters choose RJR fabrics when they want the best design and quality.

Choice of fabric is the most vital consideration for a quilting enthusiast. The fabric that is chosen makes or breaks the quilts beauty. If you come across a quilt that isn’t attractive then it has a lot to do with the fabric that has been used on it. Experienced quilters always avoid these problems by purchasing fabric only from companies that they know and trust. Hoffman Fabrics, a California based company, has proven its value to quilters all over the country. They have been around since 1924.
If you conduct a search on the net on quilting fabrics, the name Hoffman will definitely pop up. Hoffman specializes in screen-printed high quality cotton and cotton blends. They also produce dyed and hand painted fabrics. They introduce a new line of fabrics every single year and it is popularly known as ‘Luscious Balis and colorful prints.’ There fabrics are truly inspiring and its not just a market hype. If you take a look at the wide variety of fabrics and colors that they have to offer you wont be surprised why they are the first choice for quilters all over the country. Not only this, Hoffman has also shown a great deal of support to quilters. Hoffman challenge, which started in 1987, is proof of this.
Each year, one upcoming fabric design is chosen by the talents of Hoffman fabrics to be used in the challenge. Doll-makers, accessory and clothing designers and quilt makers alike are challenged to make use of the fabric in designing an item that is original. The entries that win are featured in a travel show that is known to stop at museums, shops, galleries and quilting guilds. Quilters made 94 entries in the first year of the challenge. Up to 700 have been made since then. Not only this, the traveling show too has gained immense popularity with 12 collections traveling nationwide. They even stop at Canada.
Hoffman promotes the quilting art in a number of other ways apart from the challenge. Pine Needles Design’s designer McKenna Ryan has agreed to pair with Hoffman to create patterns that are based on their fabrics. Because Hoffman batik fabric has an increased thread count that helps in preventing fraying, Ryan likes to use it for her appliqu

Patience, Jenny! If you don’t learn patience, you’re going to have trouble getting on in the world.Sewing brings out the best and the worst on people. When you do your best to sew you will produce beautiful, functional, pieces with your own hands and experience a personal calm, but if you don’t focus and always impatience, you will produce nothing but shredded fabric destined for the rag bin. There so many people that gave up sewing because nothing ever came out right. If you want to make the best fabric, first thing you do before you touch the machine is remind yourself that you have to be patient and calm. Sewing is an art and a science that can contribute to our material and our spiritual growth. You can design your own pattern in any way you like. Basic sewing skills, the patience to make and rework mistakes and a willingness to tap into your own creativity are all it takes to become a practical pattern maker. Since some people get very impatient on sewing, they rather buy clothes that’s “in” today and spend so much money on it. They don’t want to waste their time at home sewing their clothes when you can go to the mall and just purchased it right away. You can do that but then you will lose so much money since everyday there always different kind of style of clothing that comes out and of course you would like to buy that too so you can be updated.

For those quilters who hand cut their patches, here is a shortcut way to hand cut the patch and know that your finished piece will be the right size.Rather than marking the cutting line on your fabric, mark the sewing line. That way, you have an accurate sewing line, regardless of how accurate your cutting line is.After all, the point of accurate stitching is to get an accurate patch when the block is sewn together. Here’s how: Step 1: Create a template the finished size of your patch and place it on the wrong side of your fabric. There are a few things to watch for as you place the template on your fabric.First is to be sure that the straight sides of your template are lined up with the straight grain and cross grain of your fabric. For more information and a description with pictures of the grains of fabric, see the article about Fabric Grain Lines.Second – if you are marking more than one patch at a time (which I recommend), be sure that you leave at least 1/2 inch between the patches – having enough space for each patch to have a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Also, be sure that your template is placed at least 1/4 away from an edge of the fabric and the selvedge edge (after you trim the selvedge off).Third – place the template on the wrong side of your fabric. You will mark a sewing line, and you want to be sure that as you sew on the wrong side of the fabric, your line is showing to guide you. Step 2: Mark around the outside of your template with a pencil or marker that shows up on your fabric.Because you are marking on the wrong side of the fabric, it is only a little bit critical that your mark doesn’t show.Mostly you want to be sure that the mark won’t show through permanently on the front of your quilt. Most of the pencils available for quilting will work great for this type of marking.Surprisingly, there are several different colors that can be used for marking dark fabric – silver is one of my favorites, yellow works well, and white is good as well. Soapstone is another option. The idea is to get a soft material that will mark the fabric easily, so you get an accuracte mark without stretching and pulling the fabric. Step 3: Remove the template and determine where the 1/4 seam allowance is (this is where you will cut).Long before quilt shops started carrying 1/4 inch masking tape, I discovered it in a paint store. Not too surprisingly, it is less expensive there and at other home improvement stores like Home Depot, although you don’t get the fancy packaging that assures you it is for quilting.Let me assure you, the tape is the same. The point is, you need to determine where you will cut that is approximately 1/4 inch away from your sewing line. You could also use a ruler to measure the 1/4 inch, and mark a cutting line. Step 4: Cut the patch on the cutting line.Using your scissors, cut the patch on your cutting line – either on the outside of the masking tape, or on a drawn cutting line.If you are using masking tape, you can easily just move the tape around the outside edge of the patch. The tape will be sticky enough to use to mark several patches.Whether your cuts are perfectly straight are immaterial (pardon the pun), because the more critical line is the sewing line. As you sew these patches together, you will want to stitch on the inside of the marked sewing line.It is surprising how much difference just a pencil width will make in whether your finished block is the correct size.

Sewing machines have been transformed in recent years. Manufacturers now offer electronic and computerized machines that are virtually trouble-free and much more reliable than previous versions. With the addition of specialized features and functions, users are now offered a selection of machines suited to their sewing style.

Quilting machines, in particular, are specifically designed to make the quilting experience easy and trouble-free, and also provide the quilter with a machine that can give a professional finish to any project.

A quilting machine has special features which include:Extended Bed Space

The bedspace is the working area located between the needle and the inside of the machine. An extended bed space offers an area of approximately 8-9” wide by 5-6” high, which is larger than a standard sewing machine and provides more than ample space for a quilter to maneuver bulky quilts or large pieces of fabricHigh Speed

Most top-of-the-line quilting machines offer high speed stitching which is usually around 1000 stitches per minute. The high speed rating is normally applied to the straight stitch only, with slightly reduced speed for decorative stitches. This feature offers the quilter the ability to quickly piece and quilt their project.Stitch Regulator

Some manufacturers offer an optional attachment for their machines called a stitch regulator. The purpose of the stitch regulator is to provide a consistent stitch length when doing free motion quilting, regardless of how slow or fast the fabric is being moved. Quilting Stitches

Specialty quilting stitches, such as buttonhole appliqué and faux hand-quilting stitches, offer a quick and simple alternative to these traditional hand-quilting techniques.Manual Tension Control

Some quilting machines are equipped with a manual tension control. This control offers the quilter the ability to regulate the top thread tension quickly and accurately. This offers an advantage over machines with automatic tension control. As quilters often use different weights of thread in the top and bobbin, proper tension control becomes critical. With a manual control a quilter can easily and incrementally fine tune their top tension as they are stitching. With an automatic control it is necessary to access the settings within the control panel of the machine which takes longer and can be less accurate.Manual Stitch Length/Width Control

As with the manual tension control, a manual stitch length/width control is also located on the front of the machine and similar benefits apply.Needle Up/Down

A needle up/down setting allows the user to stop sewing with the needle in the down position. This is an advantage when working with heavy quilts or when doing free motion quilting. When stopping with the needle down, there is less chance of the quilt slipping providing a continuous stitch line.Auto thread cutter

An automatic thread cutter is a very useful feature on a quilting machine. Cutting both the top thread and the bobbin thread in one simple action, it reduces both thread wastage and the time taken to manually trim thread tails.Feed Dogs Control

Dropping the feed dogs allows your quilt to move easily when doing free motion quilting.

When deciding if a quilting machine is right for you, shop around and visit your local sewing machine dealers. Try out two or three models and then decide which one is for you.
