Sewing machines range in price from $25 to thousands of dollars. This is because the quality of the machines and the different features that they have vary pretty widely. It’s important to consider just exactly what you want to be able to do with your new machine before you buy it. What features do you want your machine to have?Do you want it to be able to do different kinds of stitches? The cheapest machines just do straight stitches. If all you want is a simple seam, then that may be okay with you. However, if you want a lot of choices when it comes to different kinds of stitches, then some of the high-end machines can do 100 or more types of stitches. How important is it to you that it be easy to thread? If you are just going to put in one color of thread and use that all the time, then it may not be that important to you. If you want to change colors or thread types often, then you really need something that is easy to thread. With some machines, threading them is like running a rat maze blindfolded. With others, you just drop the thread in place and that’s about it.Do you want your sewing machine to be able to connect to your computer? If you intend to do embroidery with your machine, then this is the only way to go. You make your embroidery design on your computer, connect it to your sewing machine, click the mouse and then walk away. When you get back, it’s done.

Home embroidery machines are becoming increasingly popular among skilled seamstresses who want to take their sewing to a unique, personalized level. Not only are they utilizing embroidery for their personal projects, many seamstresses are quickly discovering they can turn their machine into an ATM machine!

Personalization on everything from purses to diaper bags to clothing is becoming the rage once again. While personalizing items was popular during the 80’s, it was often restricted to those stores that could accommodate commercial size sewing machines. Now with home embroidery machines size, seamstresses everywhere are able to take advantage of the embroidery and personalization craze that is sweeping the world.

Home embroidery machines are becoming a useful tool for those who are wanting to start a business from the convenience of their home. They are easy-to-use and with the various computerized imagery available for download, you can find just about any image imaginable to embroidery! While using a home embroidery machine is pretty straightforward, if you elect, you can take classes at your local fabric store as well as find instruction online. Gone are the days of complex, hard-to-use machines. With the new class of home embroidery machines, you don’t have to be an expert seamstress to turn out gorgeous pieces of art.

With consumers wanting just about everything personalized, the demand for embroidered goods is high. Whether someone is looking for an item for a wedding, a sports team, a company logo or even popular cartoon characters, there’s a design out there to fit exactly what your customers are looking for. The most popular items seem to be anything baby related. Cloth diapers used as burp cloths, embroidered with the baby’s name and decorated with hand-sewn ribbons are very popular and can be sold for $10-$15 per diaper. Also, cloth diaper covers for use in the traditional manner are also in demand with popular designs being sock monkeys, anything Disney related, baby’s names and even pictures of the babies themselves digitized and then embroidered are popping up on bums! Depending on the seamstress, some diaper covers have fetched $150 EACH! Obviously, the embroidery business can be not only a fun hobby but can also prove to be quite lucrative, if you find the right niche.

Luckily, entering into the home embroidery business isn’t as cost prohibitive as it once was. Brother is one company, in particular, that has recognized the need for high-quality, affordable machines. Where commercial machines once sold for thousands, Brother is now marketing embroidery sewing machines for as little as $300, sometimes less, making it affordable for nearly anyone to purchase.

What was once reserved for those with deep pockets is now becoming an affordable hobby for nearly anyone. With a little bit of money and a good machine, you can try your hand at embroidery! And, who knows, your works of art even parlay your new home embroidery machine purchase into a personal ATM machine!

If you are like most consumers today you want to make sure you are getting the best deal for any product you are going to purchase. This means that you are going to ask your friends, look online and go to stores to get sewing machine ratings to help you make your final decision. Sewing machines start at under a hundred dollars ($100) for basic mechanical sewing machines. By adding stitches, features like button hole settings, computerized stitches and patterns, the ability to do embroidery, quilting options and more you can easily find machines that are now over three thousand dollars ($3000).

How do you make sense of all the brands, models and features? One way is to gather sewing machine ratings on the types of machines you are considering. A sewing machine rating on a long arm quilting machine is not going to help you if you are looking for machines that sew seams and decorative stitches. There are many sites with ratings and reviews of just about all available models. A great site for expert reviews in How Stuff Works with almost two hundred models reviewed and rated of all price ranges and features. Another place to go is the library to look at the Consumer Reports Buyers Guide. They annually review many different models and offer Best Buy recommendations in different price categories. Models are rated on reliability, durability and cost benefit comparisons.

JoAnn Fabrics offers a full comparison chart on all of the Singer Models it sells in stores and online. It divides them into three categories – sewing machines, sewing machines with embroidery and serger feature machines. The chart starts with the number of built in stitches for each machine (7 for the 1507WC and 173 for the 7470 Confidence Model). It shows you how many needle positions each model has (1-13) and the maximum width stitch for each model. The chart goes on to detail what features are available by putting a bullet point in the box for each feature like top drop in bobbin, Drop and Sew Bobbin TM, what kind of work light it has, what kind of drop feed and whether the needle is programmable. This is just for the regular sewing machines. JoAnn’s chart does the same things with the features specific to the other two categories and is a great tool if you are looking for a Singer machine of any type. The only issue I have with this chart is that there are no prices.

Buying Your First Sewing Machine

By Arin Rollins at http://www.easysewingtips.com

The first item you need to start sewing is a sewing machine! Here are a few tips on finding the perfect starter machine for you:

Begin simple – You do not need all the bells and whistles on your first machine. You won’t want to have to sit down and read a 500 page manual just to learn how to thread the machine before you can even sew a stitch! I personally love the Brother brand of machines. They make a great starter model – the LS 2125i, for example. I have had better luck with Brother than with the comparable Singer model. The Singer model seemed to jam a lot and produced uneven stitches. Maybe I just had a lemon but when I bought another Brother machine I was very happy with the quality for the price (only $89!!)

Where should I get my first sewing machine? My suggestion is to go to Wal-Mart or Target. You can find a great machine under $99. You are welcome to go to a fabric store but you will probably pay much more. Wal-Mart usually has a great craft section that also carries simple sewing supplies.

What functions should it have? Find one that has some basic stitches and button hole capabilities. Basic stitches include straight stitch, zig zag stitch, hem stitch. etc. All machines have tension control and stitch length dials which you can find out more about in your sewing machine’s instruction manual. Remember, the simpler the machine, the simpler the instruction manual, and the faster you will be off and sewing!! Some machines will have a lot of stitches which look fun but can be overwhelming to a beginner. These machines are great for more advanced seamstresses, but I would stick to a simple machine to begin with. All the projects on my blog are made with my $89 machine from Wal-Mart!

Read the instruction booklet – If you took my advice and bought a basic machine, leafing through the instruction booklet should take 15 minutes. It will give you instructions on how to thread the needle, wind the bobbin, and perform all other functions of the machine. For instance, if you want to try a zig zag stitch, go to the page that says “zig zag stitch” and it will tell you the recommended thread tension and stitch length settings for best results.

So go get a great starter machine and get sewing! For more articles about all things sewing, visit me at http://www.easysewingtips.com. I guarantee you will be inspired and find some sewing projects you can make at home!

Sewing can be fun and easy once you master some basic sewing techniques. To get you started, I thought we would list some of the essential tools and materials you will need, from selecting the right fabric and notions, to using the correct settings on your sewing machine. Whether you are a sewing novice or an experienced seamstress, I hope you will find some of these sewing techniques helpful.
Before you begin any sewing projects, it is best to get all your sewing equipment together and have it in a convenient location near your sewing machine. You can purchase your sewing supplies at a crafts or fabric store or from online stores.
Be sure and make a list of what you need before you go shopping so you don’t forget a vital piece of equipment that will prevent you from starting a project. Having the right tools for each project will make any sewing technique easier to complete. You will save time and effort.
Sewing techniques for any project needs to include needles, thread, scissors, fabric and a sewing machine for all your crafts to be finished into a professional finished project.
Cutting Tools are an essential part of your supplies, which should include, dressmaker shears, pinking shears, for cutting fabric. Sewing scissors for general sewing needs, and embroidery scissors for snipping threads and cutting into corners. Any sewing technique is easier with the proper scissors.
Use a seam ripper with care, for unpicking stitches. A craft knife or paper scissors are essential for cutting patterns. When cutting many identical layers or straight panels and strips, a rotary cutter and self-healing mat will make the job quicker and easier.
Needles and Threads. Choosing the right fabrics for a project is important, but it is just as important to use the right needle and thread for the fabrics you use. This will ensure that your projects will look more professional when they are finished. Essentials include 100% cotton or cotton wrapped polyester thread as well as hand and machine sewing needles sized to complement various fabric weights. Use sharps for wovens and ballpoints for knits. A needle threader is also useful. All sewing techniques are easier with the right sewing supplies.
Needles, there are many types of needles available, and getting the right needle for your fabric is important. In general, a medium-length needle is suitable for most hand-sewing tasks. Sewing machines have their own needles for different fabrics you must make sure to follow the machine manufacturer’s own recommendations. Your sewing techniques will look more professional.
There are many different threads that can be bought, some for hand sewing and others for machine work. Ask in your local crafts or fabric store for advice-getting the right type of thread is as important as getting the right color for any sewing technique. It makes it a lot easier to keep a large assortment of all kinds of sewing supplies on hand. If you intend to do a lot of sewing they will all be used in the future. That way you will not have to be concerned about a shortage of any supplies.

A sewing machine is a textile machine used to stitch fabric or other material together with thread.Sewing machines have come a long way since the early prototypes and are extremely flexible in their usage, from the home user right up to commercial manufacturers. There are three types of sewing machines below.Electronic sewing machinesThe machine needle works when an electric impulse shoots through it while a traditional foot pedal allows the sewer to vary the pressure and control the speed of the needle and the rate at which the fabric is fed through. These models allow for a reasonable range and size of stitches which are selected by turning a dial. They are much faster and more accurate than old-fashioned manual models.Computerised sewing machinesThese machines do everything that ordinary electronic machines do plus an awful lot more. The machines are controlled by computerised chips with stitch style, tension, length and width programmed in by the manufacturer. They are operated using a touchpad and computer screen, and you can download programs from your PC. The machine can memorise past work and will also store hundreds of different stitches for you to choose from.Overlocker machinesOverlocker machines are used to stop fraying and give a professional finish to the seams of a garment. You can use an ordinary machine to neaten an edge but you have to cut the fabric yourself, then set the machine to zig zag stitch, which all takes time and does create a slight ridge. You can buy an overlocker in addition to your sewing machine but you can’t use an overlocker on its own as it’s limited in what it’s able to do.

When you think about sewing machines what do you think of in terms of the capabilities? Do you think in terms of its varied functions? Or how it can make things easier for you?

Well, when I think about sewing machines I think of some of the things I am going to be able to accomplish with it. I may choose to think about the different items that I am going to be able to fix when I have a sewing machine around or it could be the many different items I am going to be able to make with the use of a sewing machine.

How many of us really thought about how the sewing machine came about? Not likely. More than likely there was not many of us that really think about where the sewing machine came from. They are just probable aware that they seen their mother or grandmother using one all the time either fixing items that had a small tore or making some complete outfits for their children. Now days the sewing machine is not used as much for making complete outfits for you children or for yourself.

They are used more for convince such as fixing little tears that you may have noticed on your cloths or for making different quilts and blankets. When you think about making an entire outfit for your children you start to think that there is no way that they are going to wear anything that you have made for them. With some of the children anymore that is going to be true.

Even if you are not thinking of making an outfit for your children you may think of making different items for around the house. You are able to make simple things like curtains or blankets. If you are feeling a little brave you could even do little more complicated things like some quilts for your home. Yet there are quilt designs out there that are going to give you some ease with the pattern having everything ready for you to sew together.

No matter what your skill on a sewing machine is you will be able to a little sewing hear and there. As you are practicing with the little stitches you are doing on cloths you will soon be able to accomplish more difficult tasks to try.

Now, get on to get one sewing machine today!

With the advancement of modern machine there is no stitch or pattern that sewing machine can’t perform. Embroidery sewing machine adds beauty and themed detail to anything you sew. There is some of the embroidery machine solely designed for embroidery work only. For an intermediate jumping on embroidery work is not so easy. It needs expert guideline or training methods to learn. There are types of embroidery sewing machines you will meet while doing embroidery on your machine.

a) Mechanical embroidery sewing machines

b) Electronic embroidery sewing machines

c) Computerized embroidery sewing machines

The latest trend is prevailing of computerized embroidery sewing machine. The increased sales in embroidery pattern are winning the hearts of people. Embroidery machine comes in two basic styles. You can avail the benefits of plain embroidery machine or sewing embroidery machine blending with both sewing and embroidery.

Modern computerized embroidery machine uses memory card to store the pattern or designs. Even a simple trainee can efficiently run the machine. You just need to connect the machine with a computer through USB connection and now the work of editing, copying, and downloading the newly designed pattern can be done at ease. A more advance version of embroidery machine uses LCD panels along with new features where the full control of embroider task gets complete within short span of time.

Embroidery sewing machine has the ability to execute embroider and sewing work. Generally, these machines are seen in hands of tailors and usual weavers.

The latest computerized technology has made the work much easy and simple giving best of quality in return with beautiful designs, and pattern. The catalog of embroidery includes Appliqué, Backer/Stabilizer, Bobbin, Digitize, Fill Stitch, Hoop, Running Stitch, Satin Stitch, and Underlay.

Before buying a wise person should always ask for the key features. It is advisable for a beginner to opt for the second-hand machine. A used embroidery sewing machine does not necessarily means a scrap or neglected piece of asset. You should be meticulous in selecting the right machine for you as the factor to buy within your budget also does matter. And afterwards when you become expert enough in embroider and sewing work then only you should buy a new brand model of embroidery sewing machine. Brother Embroidery sewing machine has gained much of fame in sewing industry. Days are gone of doing the cumbersome work manually using typical sewing machine. The changing time has changed the minds of people to switch over to use most hi-tech technology.

Just before you sit down to begin all those back to school and holiday sewing machine projects, it is a good time to take a moment to do some rountine maintenance on your sewing machine. If your like me, I normally don’t think to do anything with the machine other that sew with it until it decides not to work properly.

The easiest thing to do to keep your running smoothly is do some cleaning. The bobbin area and the area around the feed dogs usually get clogged up with lint and need to be cleaned at least once every 3 months.

The sewing guide sheet that come in every pattern also gives accurate and detailed instructions for assembling, sewing, and finishing details for your specific garment and view. Following this set-by-step guide even if you think you’re a pro will eliminate needless errors in construction.

It is even a good idea to again highlight the particular view you are making and noting where its specific sewing instructions start. By checking off each step as it is completed makes it easier to put down a project and start back up on it at a later time. Interuptions do happen.

Many modern sewing machines contain microprocessors, which enable the selection of a wide range of different stitching patterns. Computer-controlled machines are now also available, with programmes which allow the user to create their own embroidery patterns on screen. The machine will automatically reproduce these designs. Another type of machine in wide use, particularly in industry, is the overlocker. This was first developed in the late 19th century and is able to cut, sew, and neaten seams in one operation.

Sewing machines were invented long back during the first Industrial Revolution. The intention behind the invention of such machines was to decrease the time required in sewing, as before this all the sewing work was done manually. The cloth companies needed to optimize their work and sewing machines was the answer.

Once the first sewing machine was invented, the productivity and the efficiency of the clothing and fabric industries increased vastly. Also, the sewing machines have improved greatly with their speeds increasing manifolds, variations available in stitching styles. The modern sewing machines look and work in a much more mechanized way as compared to the sewing machines which our great grandmothers used. Instead of simple stitching, they embroider, stitch, attach buttons, do pekoe and many more other activities.

The older machines used a single thread chain stitch mechanism. The modern sewing machine uses two threads instead of one and uses what is called lock stitching mechanism. The industrial sewing machines are generally specialized for one type of stitching since they need to be optimized. They are designed in a way that the fabric is able to glide in and out easily, without any hassle of thimbles and needles. The ease reduces the effort required and saves a lot of time.

The problem with the chain stitch was – it was extremely weak and it was possible to pull it apart very easily. With the introduction of machines in the field, people started to think that a better and stronger way of stitching could now be devised which would only be possible through machine usage. Lock stitch was the answer to their questions. In the case of lock stitch, two different threads are interlocked from both the sides of the fabric. It results in a stitch which can be looked as if the fabric is stitched from both ends making it much more strong and durable than the conventional chain stitch.

Thomas Saint was the first person to have a design for sewing machine patented. His machine was designed to work on canvas and leather. A working model of the same was never built. Other designs and patents came along in the future. Walter Hunt was the developer of lock stitch technique.

Other than the basic requirements in the motion of loopers, needles and bobbins, the most important movement is that of the fabric. It is necessary that the fabric moves at the required time (generally continuously) so that the stitches are made at the right position. The motion is also called as `feed`. Typical feed motion include: needle feed, drop feed, puller, walking foot, and manual. Generally, more than one kind of feed is used in a single machine to optimize the working.

A household machine will generally include only the lock stitch mechanism. But the machine can be used in a little different way (generally by moving the needle in different ways which is an included function in the machine); fancy stitches can be made possible. The simplest form of a fancy stitch is zigzag in which the needle just needs to perform an oscillatory motion continuously as the stitching is done normally.

Mechanical configuration can differ vastly in sewing machines. Some of the typical configurations are – cylinder bed, flat bed, off the arm and post bed. All the basic feed mechanism and stitch types are available in all these configurations. However, for industrial purposes the best possible configuration is used for a type of stitch. Like, blind stitch always uses cylinder bed configuration.

The invention of sewing machine was a necessity. And its introduction greatly increased the production and quality of the cloth industry.
